Lamma Leisure Walk (by Patrick Lam)

09:30am - 11:30pm -- Leisurely walk from Sok Kwu Wan -> Lo So Shing -> Pavillion at top of hill -> Hung Shing Yeh Beach -> Ah Po Natural Spring Tofu -> Yung Shue Wan Main Street

The walk from Sok Kwu Wan to Yung Shue Wan can be achieved in about an hour, i.e., if it’s straight walking and not leisurely strolling. Estimation for our type of leisure walk is 2.5 hours, allowing us to explore the various unique aspects that Lamma Island has to offer.

Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes, wear a cap or bring an umbrella to shield off the sun and wear sun block. Bring a light jacket but usually you will discard its use once you started walking. So by all means carry a knapsack and bring some mineral water.

Before entering Sok Kwu Wan, there stands the rebuilt Tinhau temple. You can pay your visit there or go to the shops that sell local marine products.

10 more minutes later, you can see the Sok Kwu Wan fish farm in front directly. It’s a nice little waterfront walk and you can take many scenic photos along the way.

10 minutes from there you will be walking on the waterfront and there are 3 caves there known as Kamakazi Grottos. Legend has it that during WWII, the caves were used by the Japanese Occupation Army to store torpedo gunboats. Their intention was if the Allied Troops were go try and land on Lamma Island, they would sneak the gunboats out from the caves and commit suicide by ramming the gunboats against the invaders. Fortunately, the war ended and there was no invasion by the Allies.

After visiting the 3 caves, there is a pavilion for you to enjoy the scenery. In fact there are two close by each other – one offering more of the Pacific Ocean and the other one a bird’s eye view of the fishing village of Sok Kwu Wan.

The pavilion we walk down to the Lo So Shing, it’s actually a little village. We can meander to the 3-room Lo So Shing School via the waterfront. The school is one of those schools where you go through different class levels but remain in the same room.

Another 15 minutes walk and there is another hilltop pavilion assuming you guys are not avid walkers. There we can take a nice break and enjoy the panoramic view of the island as well as the Pacific Ocean. Plenty of photo can be opped there.

Taking about 30 minutes to do a little bit more hiking all the way down to another hilltop pavilion, we will reach Hung Shing Yee Wan, the popular beach on Lamma. We can spend a little time there and soak in the fresh sea air. There is also an organic garden there where we can check out their herbicide-free vegetables and perhaps try out one of their 40 kinds of herbal teas.

The walk is quite easy, with paved roads. Along the way, you can get a glimpse of how the locals live, i.e., T-shirts, shorts and thongs. 15 minutes into the walk, we will come across the famous tourist and local attraction – Ah Por Tofu. Truly delicious home-made tofu fa and to cheung – all at $6 each. We should definitely try it.

At Yung Shue Wan, you can check out the various quaint stores that line the main “thoroughfare”, offering little treasures from Thailand, Tibet, etc. Many stores offer local products, like garlic chili, sun cured seafood, etc. There is also a woman who sells these semi-precious stone or crystal bracelets and necklaces with stones that are as large as eggs.
